Available resources
We provide the following resources at the VirtualRDC:
- Computing resources on the open internet:
- Compute servers: We have several 32-bit and 64-bit servers that are similar to servers in the Census RDCs, and can be used for computational as well as teaching tasks outside of the confines of the typical RDC. Information on these servers is described on the “Hardware description” page, access is described in the “How to use the VirtualRDC” guide, and you can find more information in the Hardware category.
- Code repositories: Servers which can be used for collaborative structured code development. Please see “Code repositories” for more information.
- Wikis: We host a small wiki farm, typically with restricted access, for collaborative documentation purposes of RDC-related projects.
- Compile server: The 64bit Linux servers of both the VirtualRDC and the Census RDC are Itaninium-based. Although full Linux distributions exist for the architecture (we run SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, there’s also a Redhat version), many software products don’t exist for Itanium. We have compiled a number of open-source packages, provided resources for small ISVs to compile their products, and packaged them in the RPM format common to SUSE and Redhat distributions.
- NSF-funded supercomputer in the Census RDC.
- Data sets: you will find on the VirtualRDC
- Zero-obs datasets as a programming help
- Public-use datasets constructed to resemble their confidential RDC-hosted counterparts (they obviously do not contain any confidential information)
- Public-use datasets not elsewhere available, related to the use and creation of synthetic data; a full list is available here.
